More than 4,000 jail staffers in 52 penitentiaries across the country ratified a collective agreement with the federal government today.
The contract between the Treasury Board of Canada and the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN) finalized the deal on Sept. 10, by a vote of 90 per cent. That also includes a global agreement with the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) which covers operational matters.
As part of the new deal, correctional officers will get a 9.5 per cent wage increase over the four-year contract, compensation for statutory holidays, as well as improvements to overtime and occupational safety standards.
Before this latest agreement (which expires in May 2014), federal correctional officers had been without a contract for three years. The deal will become official on Oct. 15.
