Employees at Pastway Planing and Wood Preserving recently voted to join the United Steelworkers (USW).

The Combermere, Ont., workers voted 63 per cent in favour of joining the union. The vote, held on June 17, was supervised by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.

A total of 58 Pastway Planing employees will be joining the USW.

The workers produce lumber and treated wood products used in decks, landscaping, fencing, boardwalks and docks.

“I congratulate the employees of Pastway Planing on their decision to give themselves a strong, collective voice in their workplace and to bring greater democracy to their working lives,” said USW’s Ontario director Marty Warren.

Hundreds of workers in eastern Ontario have recently voted to join USW, the union reported, including 250 employees at Alexandria Moulding in Renfrew County and 900 employees at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River.
