OPSEU warns cuts could lead to labour action at Kennedy House

Union, employer to meet with assistance of a mediator

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) is warning a demand for wage cuts could lead to labour action at Kennedy House Youth Services in Ajax, Ont.

The parties are scheduled to meet on Feb. 10 with the assistance of a mediator. OPSEU said the demand for further wage cuts could lead to labour disruption as early as Feb. 12.

According to the union, the board of Kennedy House is demanding its workers accept 11 years of wage cuts. The employer’s most recent proposal was rejected by OPSEU Local 361’s 17 members.

The union said that workers have been hit with a six per cent wage cut and losses to benefits in the past six years. The newest proposal — which includes cuts to income and benefits — would add up to 11 straight years of wage cuts.

“More than a decade of wage cuts shows total contempt for our members,” said Dave Ramphal, OPSEU bargaining team chair.
