St. Thomas caregivers join Alberta’s largest union

About 115 auxiliary nursing care workers at St. Thomas Health Centre in Edmonton became the newest members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) following a worksite vote held on Feb. 24.

“We have the strength in numbers and the experience to help these workers address their concerns and to move toward a collective agreement that values them for the important work they do every day,” said Susan Slade, union vice-president.

The licensed practical nurses and health care aides employed at St. Thomas represent the first group of workers from Saint Elizabeth — a not-for-profit charitable organization that encompasses health care providers in various provinces — to join the union, said AUPE. Covenant Care owns the facility.

AUPE is Alberta’s largest union with more than 90,000 members province-wide. More than half work in public, private and not-for-profit health care.
