The Pas Library and Les Tournesols de Saint-Vital in Manitoba join MGEU

Both certify after Bill 7: Union

The Pas Regional Library (Local 440), and Les Tournesols de Saint-Vital (Local 441) — both in Manitoba — joined Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) in May.

Nine workers from The Pas Regional Library voted to join the MGEU, while 24 employees of Les Tournesols de Saint-Vital agreed to certify, said the union.

Local 441 members provide Francophone child care, a service that’s in high demand in South Winnipeg.

The new additions join four new locals who have come onboard within the past two months. All have organized with the union after the introduction of Bill 7, which made joining a union more difficult for workers, according to MGEU.

The first step for both locals is to hold elections and establish bargaining committees who will be working to negotiate their first collective agreements.
