Iron miners come to terms with ArcelorMittal

Agreement comes after 30 bargaining sessions

A tentative agreement has been reached between ArcelorMittal Mines and the United Steelworkers for 2,000 miners and support workers in the upper north shore of the St. Lawrence River.

They work at an iron mine in Fermont, Quebec, a resource railway and the port facilities at Port-Cartier. The bargain was reached after an overnight bargaining session beginning on Sunday, March 27.

According to Steelworkers’ regional co-ordinator Alain Croteau, “We feel we have achieved an advantageous labour contract.”

No details of the agreement were released when it was announced on Monday. The ratification vote will take place on March 30.
