6 other bargaining units under school board to continue negotiations
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) have reached a tentative deal, putting to an end job action by the secondary school teachers.
The agreement was announced Nov. 22, after a short period of resumed negotiations. As a result, teachers have agreed to end job action as of 8 a.m. Thursday morning. Beginning Nov. 12, teachers took part in job action that saw them cutting back on supervisory/voluntary activities, including attending meetings, completing ministry reports, supervising students and participating in extracurricular activities in protest of a piece of legislation passed in September that imposes a two-year contract on teachers that freezes wages, cuts sick days and scraps the practice of banking unused sick days.
“This is great news for students,” OCDSB chairwoman Jennifer McKenzie said in a statement. “Our board has a very strong commitment to student achievement and well-being. Our teachers are critical to our success.”
The details of the agreement will not be released until both sides have ratified it.
Six other OSSTF bargaining units under the school board remain in a strike position. Negotiations with those units are expected to continue this week.
