Airport, union ratify agreement after 10 months
After a marathon strike and 10 months at the bargaining table, airport workers in Newfoundland and Labrador are back on the job after voting to approve the latest offer from the airport authority.
On July 22, workers at the St. John’s International Airport — represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) — ratified a memorandum of settlement which will expire on Dec. 31, 2016, said an announcement from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).
The last collective agreement covering the group of about 90 maintenance, clerical, office and fire safety staff ran up until November 2009.
Kellie Leitch, the federal labour minister, applauded their return to work, adding that, “cooperative labour-management relations support the economic prosperity of Canadians.”
She also explained both parties enlisted the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, which provides dispute resolution and prevention help to employers and unions under the Canada Labour Code.
According to the airport authority, details will not be released publicly until the ratification process is complete.
