Minister Bergen calls for proposals to help Canadians with disabilities obtain jobs

Reforms to Opportunities Fund to better connect Canadians with employment

Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development, addressed the fifth annual Forum on Inclusion in Ottawa on Dec. 1. Bergen spoke about the many working-age Canadians who are willing and able to work, yet remain unemployed.

She announced reforms to the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities — fulfilling a Budget 2013 commitment — to better connect these Canadians with jobs.

“Our government is committed to ensuring that all Canadians who have the ability to contribute their skills and talents to our workforce have the opportunity to do so,” Bergen said. “We’re fulfilling our commitment to strengthen the Opportunities Fund so Canadians with various abilities are better connected and trained for the jobs available.”

Three key goals are being supported by the strengthened Opportunities Fund including better support for youth, increased practical and hands-on work experience, and better targeting for in-demand jobs.

Additionally, Bergen called for proposals for national projects to better connect Canadians with employment opportunities.

The address took place just days ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Dec. 3.
