Employees of Metro Bruyère supermarket in Montreal ratified a new collective agreement on Feb. 17.

“This new contract will help secure almost 100 quality jobs while maintaining decent working conditions in the retail food sector for the next six years,” said Antonio Filato, United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 500 president.

The new six-year contract includes wage increases of two per cent for every 650 hours worked. As well, whenever there is a rise to the minimum wage, workers at the beginning of the pay scale will receive wage increases between $0.25 and $2.50 per hour worked depending on their classification. Workers at the top end of the scale will receive a hybrid combination of wage increases and lump-sum payments based on their classification, said the union.

Other improvements include the creation of 11 additional full-time positions with paid casual leave days, according to the UFCW.

Also included in the new contract are increases in Christmas bonuses from 1.5 per cent to two per cent, new service-supervisor premium of $0.75 per hour and continuation of the employers’ contribution of $0.18 per hour worked per employee to the UFCW Quebec Dental Care Plan and, in the event the contribution becomes insufficient, it will be increased to $0.19 to maintain the 80 per cent reimbursement of eligible expenses for dental services.
