Too many young people unemployed: CLC president

‘Stuck in dead-end jobs’ as unemployment rises

The Canadian Labour Congress says too many young workers in Canada are unemployed and they could get left behind in a declining economy.

CLC president Ken Georgetti commented on Statistics Canada’s July Labour Force Survey, saying too many young workers leave school with large amounts of debt and no hope of finding jobs.

“Far too many of our young workers are unemployed or stuck in dead end jobs, and Ottawa should be paying more attention to them,” he said in a press release.

According to Statistics Canada, the Canadian unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points in July to 7.3 per cent. Among those in the 15-to-24 age group the unemployment rate is much higher, with 14.3 per cent without jobs and 46.9 per cent only working part time.

“If these levels of unemployment persist, we are going to sacrifice a whole generation of young people and that is a shame,” added Georgetti.
