OPSEU, LCBO make last-ditch attempt to avoid strike

Mediator orders media blackout as Friday deadline approaches

Ontario may not go dry on the eve of Victoria Day after all.

With a labour disruption deadline of 12:01 a.m. Friday morning looming, the mediator involved in the contract talks between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) has ordered both sides to implement a news blackout.

“The blackout will provide an opportunity for both sides to focus on the contract talks, the outcome of which will have a significant impact on the people of Ontario, the 7,000 members of OPSEU at the LCBO, and the Crown Agency itself,” OPSEU said in a press release.

If OPSEU members walk off the job, it will be the first strike in the 87-year history of the LCBO.
