CUPE appoints interim administrator to address 'ongoing issues'
The Toronto Civic Employees Union — known under the CUPE 416 banner — has relinquished control of the local to the union’s national office, citing “ongoing issues.”
The Canadian Union of Public Employees announced on Feb. 3 its national office would take control of the chapter, which represents about 6,000 City of Toronto staffers.
According to CUPE, the decision “was taken to overcome internal differences among members of the executive that impeded the effective and efficient decision-making of the local.”
As such, the union noted an administrator has been appointed in the interim — Gus Oliveira will report to the national president and national executive board in an effort to help resolve “ongoing issues.”
Once the process is complete, a new executive will be elected and daily operations of the local will be turned back over to CUPE 416.
