Unifor files court action over truck drivers’ wages

Union seeking wages owed through 2014 Joint Action Plan

Unifor filed papers in British Columbia’s provincial court to seek relief against Container Trucking Commissioner Andy Smith.

Smith has failed to enforce wages owed to container truck drivers as part of the March 2014 Joint Action Plan, according to the union.

Container truck drivers shut down Port Metro Vancouver for nearly four weeks in March 2014. The labour action was in protest of wage undercutting by trucking companies as well as long wait times at the Port.

Truckers returned to work after the Joint Action Plan was signed by employees and the Port, as well as both the federal and provincial governments.

“It is clear to us that the Commissioner isn’t interested in enforcing the wage rates, which will only lead to more undercutting and chaos,” said Unifor’s B.C. area director Gavin McGarrigle.

“We’re seeking justice and the wages owed to container truck drivers in Metro Vancouver.”
