Workers at Wendy’s in Thunder Bay, Ont., join UFCW

Union will negotiate first agreement with employer

Workers at Wendy’s restaurant on Memorial Avenue in Thunder Bay, Ont., voted March 8, to join United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW).

The issues that brought the employees — who are mostly young workers — to seek union representation with UFCW, Local 175, ranged from poor workplace conditions to unfair scheduling practices, as well as workplace harassment, intimidation, and threats that their jobs would be replaced with temporary foreign workers, according to the union.

“Workers in the fast food industry are often treated by their employers as disposable,” said Shawn Haggerty, president UFCW Canada, Local 175.

Local 175 will now begin the process of negotiating a first collective agreement with the employer, said UFCW.
