CAW, GM begin early contract talks

Negotiations taking place months ahead of CAMI plant’s current deal’s expiration

The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union began talks with General Motors on March 11 to negotiate a new contract at the company’s CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont.

The talks are taking place months before the current collective agreement is set to expire, after CAW Local 88 members voted in favour of the move at a Feb. 10 meeting.

Negotiations are expected to last a couple of weeks, with an internal deadline of March 24 to ink a deal.

CAW members will not be in a strike position if a deal is not reached, as the current agreement expires on Sept. 16, 2013.

CAW Local 88 represents about 2,500 production and skilled trades workers at the CAMI plant, which produces the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models.
