Steelworkers, University of Toronto reach tentative deal

Proposed collective agreement includes plan for pension sustainability

A tentative agreement was reached between the University of Toronto and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1998.

Approximately 4,100 university employees are covered by the proposed deal. Local 1998 represents more than 7,000 administrative, technical and teaching staff at the University of Toronto, Victoria University, University of St. Michael’s College and University of Toronto Schools.

The collective agreement includes improvements to health and safety, benefits, working conditions and job security as well as a plan to ensure pension sustainability.

In partnership with the University of Toronto Faculty Association, USW tabled a proposal to form a Joint Working Committee to collectively assess pension reform options and potential solutions.

“A key element of these negotiations was the historic cooperation agreement between USW Local 1998 and the University of Toronto Faculty Association to assess options to reform the pension plan and ensure its long-term sustainability,” said Paul Tsang, president of USW Local 1998.

Union members will review the agreement on September 11 and hold a ratification vote on September 12.
