Edmonton reaches agreement with 8,000 workers

Deal includes increases totalling 13.5 per cent over 5 years

EDMONTON (CP) — Edmonton has reached tentative agreements with more than 8,000 of its full and part-time workers.

The city says in a news release that the multi-year agreements run from 2014 to 2018, and that the wage increases, premiums and benefits in them total 13.5 per cent over five years.

Five unions are covered in the agreements, including inside and outside workers, transit drivers and electrical workers.

The city says ratification votes are expected to happen sometime in the New Year, and further details about the agreements will be released once they're completed.

Jeff MacPherson with Edmonton's human resources branch says the agreements represent a fair deal for employees.

He says they also provide service stability for citizens and keep the city competitive in the labour market.
