Quebec unions’ protest declared illegal strike

No sanctions announced by labour relations board

The June 2014 protest by municipal union members in Montreal was declared illegal by Quebec’s labour-relations board.

Police officers, firefighters, blue-collar workers and white-collar workers — represented by four municipal unions — held a protest outside Montreal’s city hall on June 17.

The employees gathered together to protest Quebec’s Bill 3, which set out changes to the pension plan.

A bonfire was started in the middle of the street during the protest.

The city filed a complaint, claiming the unions stopped work illegally on June 17 with the intent of disrupting city services.

The board’s ruling — issued on Feb. 25 — did not announce any sanctions.
