No wage increases in first 2 years
Support workers at Vancouver Island University, who are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 1858, have a new tentative agreement.
The deal comes after a final bargaining session this week between the employer and CUPE, since the workers have been without a contract for two years.
The four-year deal includes no wage increases for the first two years, as dictated by British Columbia’s Net Zero Mandate, and four wage increases of one per cent each in the final two years.
“Only due to our commitment and solidarity were the bargaining committees, both provincially and locally, able to get what we set out to achieve for our members,” CUPE 1858 president Deborah Hopper said in a press release.
The deal still needs to be ratified by both sides. Ratification voting will take place at the university’s four main campuses the week of Dec. 10.
