Strike on the horizon at Porter

Workers will strike if first collective agreement cannot be finalized

Employees who fuel aircraft at Porter’s Toronto Island airport could be on strike as early as next week.

The 22 workers, who have been represented by the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE) Local 343 since August 2012, work for Porter Fixed Based Operations and have been trying to negotiate a contract for several months.

Their union says they will be in a legal strike position as of Jan. 10 at 12:01 a.m.

"The Union has been very reasonable in its requests," COPE staff representative Mary Stalteri said in a press release. "We sincerely hope to be able to prevent a strike and unnecessary inconvenience to the travelling public."

COPE and the employer plan to meet on Jan. 9 to try to flesh out a first collective agreement and to prevent the strike.
