Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 175 employed at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay, Ont., ratified a new collective agreement on Sept. 10.
The parties met in conciliation to deal with wage increases following this year’s increased minimum wage, said the union.
Wages will improve by one per cent immediately and that is retroactive for hours worked since the expiry of the previous agreement. Then, wages will increase by one per cent every six months for the term of the contract. That will provide a total improvement of six per cent over three years. Employees making more than their classification rate will receive lump sum payments in lieu of rate increases, according to UFCW.
Workers now have long-term disability coverage included in their benefits. Short-term disability, however, is no longer part of their benefit package, said the union.
A new letter of understanding establishes a kitchen committee. The committee will be comprised of two unionized employee representatives and two employer representatives. The group will meet quarterly and employee’s time spent on the committee will be considered time worked, according to UFCW.
The three-year contract covers 125 hospitality workers in the bargaining unit at the hotel.
