Toronto airport security screeners ratify new agreement

Deal affects about 2,300 employees: IAM

Airport security screeners at Toronto’s Pearson and Billy Bishop Airports ratified a new collective agreement on Sept. 26.

The 2,300 screeners — members of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Local 2921, employed by Garda Canada — agreed to a new three-year agreement, said the union.

The contract provides wage increases consisting of a $2,000 lump-sum payment for full-time employees and a $1,000 lump-sum payment for part-time employees plus a 2.25 per cent wage increase upon ratification. Workers will also receive a wage increase of 2.25 per cent effective April 1, 2019 and a 2.5-per-cent wage increase effective April 1, 2020, said IAM.

Other agreement highlights include, effective April 1, 2020, an additional $0.05-per-hour pension contribution to be paid by the employer, improved contract language regarding break times and improved language regarding payroll errors, said the union.

IAM also represents airport security screeners in Vancouver and is the largest union in Canada’s Air Transport sector.
