More bereavement time off, increase in health reimbursements: UFCW

United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 1006A members working at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre in Little Current, Ont., signed a new collective agreement on March 16.

Highlights of the new agreement include an increase of more than 55 per cent in reimbursements for health-benefit claims, an increase in paid time off for bereavement, the introduction of a team-leader premium in housekeeping and the inclusion of team leader in restaurant and catering into the job classifications wage grid and an added 2.35 per cent to the end rates of pay in each year of the contract (a cumulative increase of approximately 10 per cent over the term of the agreement), said the union.

“We are proud of the excellent job that our bargaining committee did in negotiating a strong contract for members at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre,” said Wayne Hanley, UFCW 1006A president.

The new contract covers 55 employees and runs until December 2022, said the union.

UFCW Canada, Local 1006A represents about 36,000 members in a range of sectors across Ontario, including the grocery retail, food processing, hospitality, laundry, warehousing, transportation and eye-care industries.
