Workers at Saskatoon’s CBI Health Group voted overwhelmingly to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) on Sept. 3.

CBI Health Group is a Canada-wide community health care provider which operates several residential and transitional care homes in Saskatoon. The new bargaining unit will cover almost 200 employees who work in Saskatoon as childcare workers, community support workers, licensed practical nurses and homemakers, says the union.

The organizing drive started earlier this year. The application to the Labour Relations Board was made July 2, which triggered a mail-in secret ballot process. CUPE was successful in the vote, which was counted on Aug. 14, and a certification order was issued this week, says CUPE.

“We will work with our new members to fight for fair wages and a legally binding collective agreement,” says Tom Graham, president of CUPE Saskatchewan.

Next steps will include electing a local executive and a bargaining committee to negotiate a first collective agreement, says the union.

CUPE is the largest union in the province, representing 30,000 members across a variety of sectors.
