Forty employees at ASAP Secured, working at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) on Sept. 25.

The new group includes 40 workers assigned to air cargo control and officers working at checkpoints at the airport.

“We had contacted the workers in the past, but they were not ready at that time. This time they were, and they supported the IAM in a big way. The entire campaign only lasted 72 hours,” says Nick Sifakis, IAM District 140 organizer, who helped organize the workers.

The main issues for the 40 new members were better health and safety protections, respect on the job and an improved work schedule. They will join many other airport workers in IAM, Local 2309, says the union.

The IAM is the largest union in Canada’s air transport sector.
