Employees of the Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone in Gladstone, Man. agreed to join the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) on Oct. 30.

“Like so many of our members, these folks provide vital services to their neighbours,” says Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU president. “And that winter storm we had a few weeks ago highlights just how much Manitobans rely on such services when the going gets tough.”

The workers work throughout the municipality’s public works and water utility departments, which include the recycling depot and waste disposal grounds, in roles ranging from administration to equipment operator, says the union.

The next step for the new members is to elect a local executive and bargain their first contract. Addressing fair wages (they are amongst the lowest paid of RM employees in the province) and hours of work will be priorities, says MGEU.
