New Brunswick teacher assistants, administrative assistants and school library assistants have ratified a tentative contract with the provincial government. Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2745 have been in negotiations for more than two years.
The agreement does not contain a wage increase in the first two years, but the following two years will see a general increase of two per cent.
The contract also increases the guaranteed hours of work per week for teachers' assistants to 30 by September 2012. Many will still not qualify for the full-time defined benefit pension plan, though, because it requires a minimum of 31 hours worked per week.
CUPE Local 2745 represents more than 3,200 educational assistants, administrative assistants and library workers, as well as intervention workers and bus attendants.
The new agreement will expire in September 2013.
