Teamsters raises strike pay

Union says it will be highest in Canada

Teamsters Canada has raised its strike pay to $300 per week from $200, which it claims is the highest of any Canadian union.

The union says benefits will vary, depending on individual members’ status of employment, but most workers represented by Teamsters will benefit from the increase.

"Our organization is very sound financially because we manage our union dues responsibly," said Teamsters Canada president Robert Bouvier. "We have $50 million in our strike fund to cover members affected by a labour conflict."

The union made the announcement during a seminar in Toronto during which union representatives and local union officers discussed strategies for improving representation for the union’s 125,000 members.
