CN, Steelworkers ratify new contract

4-year deal comes with improvements to wages, benefits

CN Rail workers have inked a new collective agreement.

The deal, according the United Steelworkers union’s (USW) local 2004 chapter, the agreement was ratified at the end of January and before the previous agreement expired.

The four-year agreement covers approximately 3,000 maintenance-of-way employees, who inspect, maintain and repair CN Rail’s tracks, bridges and structures.

Jim Vena, executive vice president and chief operating officer at the national railway called the contract well-negotiated.

“We commend the USW leaders and membership for reaching and ratifying an amicable and mutually beneficial collective agreement with the company,” Vena said. “The agreement recognizes the value of negotiating an early deal, and it delivers solid wage and benefits improvements to union members, along with work-rule changes that will increase the efficiency of CN and its employees in maintaining and improving the company’s rail infrastructure critical to Canada.”
