GardaWorld workers locked out

140 armored car employees affected

GardaWorld workers in Ottawa were locked out on May 19.

The employer issues its lockout notice on May 15 after contract negotiations with Unifor Local 4266 members in Ottawa fell apart.

The union represents 140 GardaWorld employees. The workers make deliveries to banks such as TD, TBC, BNS, BMO and National Bank.

“We are determined to reach an equitable agreement which improves safety and job security for our members,” said Unifor Local 4266 president Andre Desjardins. “Jobs in the armored car industry can be very dangerous — it’s vital that we do not allow conditions to deteriorate.”

According to Unifor, GardaWorld is demanding concessions the union believes will affect job quality.

Negotiations between the parties began in October 2014. The current contract expired on Oct. 31.
