U of T administrative staff reach agreement

Contract negotiations with casual employees to begin in coming weeks

More than 3,800 University of Toronto administrative and technical staff have reached a tentative collective agreement with the institution.

"It was a very difficult set of negotiations and in the end we were able to reach a fair agreement that we could take back to our members," said United Steelworkers (USW) union, Local 1998 president Allison Dubarry.

The union's bargaining committee is unanimously recommending that members ratify the tentative agreement.

Union members will vote on the new deal on Sept. 9, 2011, according to the union’s website. Details of the agreement will be released upon ratification.

“We are very pleased to be able to report that a tentative agreement was reached between the University and the USW,” said University of Toronto human resources representative Angela Hildyard.

USW Local 1998 represents the largest number of unionized employees within the University of Toronto - about 6,000 workers in total. In addition to administrative and technical staff, Local 1998 also represents about 2,200 casual employees at the U of T. Contract negotiations between the casual employees and the university are expected to begin within the next few weeks.
