January construction union wage rate index unchanged: StatsCan

Composite index increased 1.8 per cent over the year

Canada’s construction union wage rate index remained unchanged in January compared with December, according to Statistics Canada. This is the fifth month in a row the rate has remained unchanged.

January’s composite index increased by 1.8 per cent compared with January 2011.

In December 2011, the most recent month for which numbers are available, the average hourly wage rate for construction workers was $28.64, according to Statistics Canada. The previous month’s average hourly wage rate was $27.15 (revised from original Statistics Canada publication).

The construction union wage rate index series measures monthly changes over time in the collective agreement hourly rates, where they exist, for 16 trades engaged in building construction in 22 metropolitan areas.
