National job vacancy rate sits at 1.3 per cent
Job openings at the beginning of this year went virtually unchanged, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.
Released on April 15, a Statistics Canada report indicated that in January, job vacancies among Canadian businesses were little changed compared to one year prior.
This year, there were 193,000 job openings, which translates to 6.7 unemployed people per vacancy. That compares to January of 2013, when there were 6.4 unemployed people per opening.
For January 2014, the national job vacancy rate was 1.3 per cent, down 0.1 per cent from 2013.
There was an average of 219,000 job vacancies per month for the entirety of 2013 — a figure that has steadily dropped since 2011. The increase in the unemployment-to-job-vacancy ratio was the result of fewer job openings, as the number of unemployed people was little changed, Statistics Canada noted.
