Employees of Speers Construction unanimously ratified a three-year collective agreement providing them with increases to wages, retirement savings and employer payments toward the cost of the benefits plan.

The 30 employees include mechanics, equipment operators, labourers, forepersons, and supervisors. They have been represented by Construction and Allied Workers Union, CLAC Local 68, for 36 years, said the union.

“The company is facing competitive bids from non-union contractors,” said Jim Oostenbrink, CLAC Kelowna regional director. “This is a strong agreement that provides for the needs of our members while ensuring the company remains competitive.”

The new contract includes wage increases of two per cent over two years. Employer contributions to employees’ RSPs will increase to $1.25 per hour in the third year of the agreement and payments toward the cost of the benefits plan will increase to $1.74 per hour, with annual increases, said CLAC.

Speers Construction is primarily involved in road construction and earth works. Recent and current projects include work in Canal Flats and the Revelstoke area and for Parks Canada and BC Hydro.
