Postal workers vote to strike

Post office optimistic a deal can be reached between parties by deadline

Mailboxes in Canada could remain empty on May 25 if the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post can’t reach a deal before then.

CUPW members have voted 94.5 per cent in favour of striking if the two parties are unable to reach a tentative agreement before the May 24 deadline.

With the aid of a government-appointed conciliator, the two parties are bargaining over wages, benefits, pensions and retiree benefits.

“Canada Post has been very focused on its demands, not ours,” said CUPW National President Denis Lemelin in a press release. “CUPW members want a collective agreement that recognizes our work is behind the increases in profits and productivity.”

Canada Post has issued a release reminding Canadians that postal workers are unable to strike at this time and that mail delivery will continue as usual. The company also indicated that they are confident a settlement can be reached.
