Strike avoided at Ontario’s Great Blue Heron Casino

Union and management reach tentative agreement shortly before deadline

The union representing employees at Great Blue Heron Casino reached a tentative agreement with the entertainment facility, narrowly avoiding the Sept. 1, 2011 strike deadline.

Earlier in the week, Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union president Ken Lewenza was calling for the Ontario government to mandate a complete shutdown of Port Perry, Ont. casino if workers had gone on strike or were locked out. He was hoping to prevent the use of replacement workers.

Agreement details are not immediately available.

Ratification meetings will be held on Sept. 2, 2011 for the 790 CAW Local 1090 members.
