Kitimat workers reach agreement

Tentative deal includes broad range of monetary increases

The 1,300 employees of the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminum smelter in Kitimat, British Columbia reached a tentative agreement on July 24 as the previous agreement was expiring.

According to a summary on the web site of the union, Local 2301 of the Canadian Auto Workers, the new agreement would increase wages by 13.5 per cent over five years, improve pensions, improve benefits, increase shift premiums and continue the no lay-off language in the contract. As well, a $2,500 signing bonus is being offered.

Ratification votes will take place on Thursday and Friday, July 26 and 27.
