Freeze will save province $55 million through 2014
The Association of Management, Administrative and Professional Crown Employees of Ontario (AMAPCEO) and the Ontario government have ratified a collective agreement that includes a two-year wage freeze.
The agreement, which affects more than 10,000 Ontario Public Service employees in various professional and administrative positions, will help the government trim costs, resulting in $24.6 million in savings in 2012-13 and another $30.4 million in 2013-14.
"This agreement demonstrates that when government and its public sector partners commit to working together, they can negotiate agreements that are both fair and responsible to both employees and the people of Ontario in these difficult economic times,” Harinder Takhar, minister of Government Services, said in a press release.
The new agreement includes the restructuring of merit pay, short-term sickness benefits and time-off provisions, and eliminates lump-sum bonuses for employees at the top pay scale.
AMAPCEO’s previous agreement with the provincial government expired on March 31, 2012.
