Mail carriers ratify collective agreements with Canada Post

Deals include job security provisions, wage increases, disability protection

Two bargaining units of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) ratified agreements with Canada Post on Dec. 20.

The Urban Postal Operations (UPO) bargaining unit, which represents about 48,000 members, voted 57 per cent in favour of an agreement with Canada Post, while the 6,000-member Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) unit voted 68 per cent in favour of their agreement.

In a letter to union members, UPO national president Denis Lemelin said the agreement includes a fully-indexed defined-benefit pension plan and job security provisions.

The RSMC agreement includes wage increases, extended health benefits and disability protection, according to a letter from fourth national vice-president Donald Lafleur. In addition, Lafleur stated reconciliation payments and back pay will be issued Dec. 20 and Jan. 19.
