New Ontario premier should reach out to unions: Teachers’ unions

OSSTF says union leaders should be among first to meet with Wynne

Ken Coran, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF), says union leaders should be among the first to meet with premier-designate Kathleen Wynne to ease labour strife.

At a rally in Toronto on Jan. 26, Coran said the Liberals should focus on rebuilding relationships in the education sector.

“(Teachers) have accepted a wage freeze for the last 12 months, so let’s build on that and solve some of these problems. Members just want to be treated with respect, and fairly,” he said.

Among the attendees at the rally were members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO).

More than 10,000 protesters marched from Allan Gardens to Maple Leaf Gardens, carrying banners and signs. Coran says the teachers’ unions want to be assured the government won’t impose contracts on them again in the future.
