Unionized officers withdraw participation in public safety unit
Unionized officers with the Cape Breton police have withdrawn their participation in some units, including the force's emergency response team and public safety unit.
Mayor Cecil Clarke says Local 1995 of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union is upset over the way the municipality handled the case of an officer who was convicted of breach of trust and obstruction of justice.
Clarke says the RCMP has been asked to step in and assist where necessary.
Union president Joan Jessome says the issue has been simmering for some time.
She says the union will work with the local and the municipality in hopes of coming to a resolution.
Jessome says there are about 180 active police officers in the union local.
