Ottawa’s RA Centre staff in legal strike position

Management dragging feet on deal: Union

Unifor is returning to the bargaining table with Ottawa’s RA Centre after a months-long decline in negotiations.

Fifty-five unionized staff members at the recreation centre — represented by Unifor Local 4270 — have been without a collective agreement since May 2014. Member voted 85 per cent in favour of a strike, if necessary.

“Our members are responsible for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of RA members while they’re at the centre,” said Unifor national representative Mike Armstrong. “Without them, the centre would cease to function. How long should our members have to work without a collective agreement?”

According to the union, management at the centre has given no indication a new deal is in the near future. Armstrong said the delays are unnecessary and not helpful for operation of the RA Centre.

The union — now in a legal strike position — said it will determine a strike deadline depending on the outcome of negotiations.
