Service, clerical staff opt for OPSEU at Providence Care

Registered nurses voted to be represented by ONA

Service and clerical staff at Providence Care in Kingston, Ont., chose the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) as their bargaining unit.

The employees — who work in a wide range of occupations — chose OPSEU over the Canadian Federation of National Independent Unions, an offshoot of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA).

In the same vote, registered nurses at the organization opted instead to be represented by the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA).

Approximately 230 nurses will be affected by the decision. ONA represents 60,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals throughout the province.

The voting was necessary after St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital and Providence Mental Health Services merged.

OPSEU already represented allied health professionals at the hospital prior to the vote.
