Employees at Unibéton in Quebec sign new agreement

Retroactive bonuses, lump-sum payments part of deal: UFCW

United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 501 members working at Unibéton locations in Quebec City, Beauport, Sainte-Marie and Saint-Basile in Quebec, ratified a new collective agreement on June 14.

The workers are employed as cement truck drivers, mixer feeders and quarry customer service agents and have been a part of UFCW 501 since 2002, said the union.

The new five-year deal contains wage increases totaling 13.25 per cent throughout the contract duration, according to UFCW.

“This agreement builds on the gains that members at Unibéton have been enjoying since 2002,” said Daniel Nadeau, UFCW 501 director for Eastern Quebec. “In addition to increased security, members will also see improvements to wages and pensions,” he adds.

The collective agreement also includes two per cent retroactive wage increases in addition to a lump sum of $0.50 per hour worked from Feb. 18, improved group insurance with employer contributing 50 per cent, an 11 per cent increase in the employer’s contribution to the pension plan and a 10 per cent increase in safety bonuses and cement-mixer cleaning bonuses in 2020, said the union.

The new agreement also sees added bonuses for closing gates, adds Good Friday as a paid holiday, has an adjustment of paid meal periods, an improved vacation policy, the introduction of a clause for jury duty and the elimination of a clause stating new hires earn $1 per hour less during probation periods, according to UFCW.
