3,500 employees affected as agreement expires Sept. 27
After several meetings across the province and a day of drop-in voting at the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 832 training centre, workers at Superstore, Extra Foods and No Frills all across Manitoba voted 99 per cent in favour on Sept. 24 of giving the bargaining committee a strike mandate.
“This 99 per cent result sends a strong message to Loblaw that the membership is serious about a fair offer,” said Jeff Traeger, president of UFCW Canada Local 832. “The workers are the backbone of this company. It’s time Loblaw gave a fair deal that respects the hard work and effort that our members put into this company.”
The collective agreement expires on Sept. 27, for members working for Loblaw in Winnipeg, Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Dauphin, Swan River and The Pas.
Bargaining will go around the clock if necessary until the contract expiration date, said the union.
A strike deadline has not yet been set.
UFCW Local 832 represents more than 3,500 workers at Superstore, Extra Foods, and No-Frills stores across Manitoba.
