The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) welcomed nursing care employees at Wentworth Manor continuing care facility in Calgary to the province’s largest union on Feb. 5.

“The persistence these workers have shown throughout the organizing process is a testament to the hard work they do every day,” said Bonnie Gostola, vice-president of AUPE and representative for the Calgary region.

On Jan. 19, a certification vote was held for 150 nursing care staff. On Jan. 31, the votes were counted and certification was granted to the worksite, said the union.

Wentworth Manor is one of four seniors care facilities in Alberta operated by the Brenda Strafford Foundation. AUPE also represents the nursing care staff at the Foundation’s Clifton Manor.

AUPE represents more than 93,000 working Albertans, with more than half who work in health care, including seniors care.
